In August, I had the privilege of joining the “Black Girls Film Camp” as their dedicated videographer, documenting every moment of this inspiring week-long intensive. Presented by Black Women Film in partnership with Scarborough Arts, East End Arts, and Workman Arts, this program offers emerging Black-identifying women filmmakers a supportive space to learn, create, and connect.
Set against a vibrant outdoor backdrop, camp participants dove into every facet of filmmaking. From crafting compelling stories and sharpening writing skills to mastering camera operation, sound recording, directing, and editing, each session built on the last—guided by experienced industry leaders who ensured no question went unanswered.
What stood out most was the strong sense of community. As participants teamed up on their projects or worked independently, moments of discovery and mutual encouragement were evident. By the final showcase, each filmmaker proudly unveiled their completed film—a true testament to their individual voice and the confidence they’d gained behind the lens.
My role was to capture these authentic moments: candid conversations during breaks, impromptu laughter during editing sessions, and thoughtful interviews with camp leads, participants, and the Black Women Film staff. Through my lens, I aimed to translate the passion and creativity buzzing throughout the camp into a cohesive narrative.
