A Creative Journey at Black Girls Film Camp 2023

This summer, I had the absolute pleasure of serving as a co-lead for the Black Girls Film Camp, an incredible initiative dedicated to empowering the next generation of Black girl creatives through storytelling and filmmaking.

Over the course of the week, I had the privilege of guiding a group of talented, passionate young filmmakers as they explored writing, directing, camera work, and editing—many for the very first time. Watching them grow in confidence and creativity was truly one of the most rewarding parts of my year.

Documenting the Journey

The images in this post offer a glimpse into the creative magic that unfolded throughout the week. From storyboarding sessions and camera tutorials to quiet moments of reflection and impromptu dance breaks—every photo and video captures the energy, focus, and joy these girls brought to the camp.

You’ll see them in action: learning, experimenting, laughing, and supporting each other as they turned their ideas into fully formed short films.

A standout moment at camp was the storytelling activity, which by week’s end had evolved into a powerful collective piece titled “The Offering.”

Here’s how it worked:

  • We started with a single line: a prompt meant to spark the imagination.

  • Each girl wrote the next line of the story without reading what came before—trusting their instinct, their voice, and their imagination.

  • Once everyone had contributed, we revealed the full story—and it was beautiful, unexpected, and deeply moving.

  • The girls then each recorded themselves reading the lines they had written.

  • Paired with clips and behind-the-scenes footage from throughout the week, we created a final video piece that reflected not only their words but the spirit of collaboration, creativity, and vulnerability they brought to camp.

It wasn’t just an activity—it became a visual poem of their collective voice.

Why This Work Matters to Me

As an artist and educator, I’m passionate about pouring into young creatives—especially Black girls, who don’t often see themselves reflected in mainstream media as directors, producers, or cinematographers. Spaces like Black Girls Film Camp matter because they don’t just teach skills; they amplify voices and build confidence.

Witnessing these girls bring their ideas to life, hearing their stories, and seeing them support one another reminded me why I do this work. Mentorship isn’t just about teaching—it’s about listening, encouraging, and holding space for creative growth.
