Embrace DIY Creativity: A Monochrome Portrait Experiment 🌹

As a new photographer, it’s easy to feel daunted by shoots that require full crews, elaborate sets, or professional stylists. Yet some of the most satisfying experiments come from embracing your own limitations and doing everything yourself. Recently, I turned a corner of my basement into a mini studio—no assistants, no hired help, just a few thrifted props.

Here’s how I made it happen—and why you should give it a try.

1. Own Your Location

I claimed a simple corner of my basement as my studio. With a red seamless backdrop and a softbox, I bypassed the need for a fancy studio. Look around your own space—corners, doorways, even a blank garage wall can become your creative classroom.

2. DIY Hair & Makeup

Rather than trying to find a makeup artist or hairstylist, I took matters into my own hands. I curled and styled my model’s hair, applied a classic red lip, and applied some eye makeup—just enough to complement the monochrome theme without drawing focus away from the overall look.

3. Thrifted Styling & Sourcing Props

Monochrome means you need fewer items, not more. I found a vibrant red dress at a local thrift store and picked up matching red florals to weave into the model’s hair. These effortless touches elevated the shoot and reinforced the color story.

4. Commit to a Color Theme

Shooting entirely in shades of red created a striking, cohesive aesthetic. From backdrop to dress to complimentary florals, every element spoke the same visual language. Monochrome shoots not only look polished—they simplify your styling decisions when you’re flying solo.

5. Keep Gear Minimal

A single strobe positioned at a 45° angle was all the lighting I needed. I paired it with a 50 mm prime lens—perfect for portraits in tight spaces. Minimal gear keeps you nimble and focused on the creative process rather than equipment logistics.

Grab a backdrop (or a painted wall), thrift a standout piece, and invite a friend in front of your camera. You might just be surprised by what you create when you trust your instincts and embrace the DIY spirit.
