Floral Muse: A Creative Collaboration with Annesha 🌸

This creative portrait session sprang from a shared vision between my makeup artist, Adeeba, and I: to craft striking beauty portraits that celebrated florals in an editorial, fashion-forward style. From our initial mood board—bursting with oversized blooms and bold color palettes—to the final artful arrangements, every detail was designed to let the flowers take center stage. Our model, Annesha, infused the shoot with an effortless confidence and playful spirit. This was also a great opportunity for me to play around with the beauty dish.

Hair Challenges: Embracing Natural Texture
Managing Annesha’s hair texture proved more complex than anticipated—studio heat and humidity introduced frizz that could have derailed our sleek floral vision. Rather than battling every flyaway, we leaned into the natural movement, using light sprays and gentle scrunching to define the curls. That choice brought a refreshing authenticity to the portraits, as the hair’s organic texture complemented the bold floral elements and added dynamic energy to each frame.

Creating Motion in Stillness
The beautiful thing about creative shoots is you have the time to experiment with new things. I wanted to try a technique called “a cinemagraph”—a single frame that comes alive through subtle, looping motion. In this scenario, Annesha holds her pose in perfect stillness while Adeeba’s hand applies lipstick. The result is a captivating visual that merges photography and video, adding narrative depth.

Lighting and Background: Lessons Learned
I chose a white backdrop to achieve a clean, high-key look, but with too few lights and too much distance between Annesha and the background, it rendered as gray in the final frames. This experience reinforced the importance of planning both spacing and light placement. In future shoots, I’ll either move the subject closer to the backdrop, introduce dedicated lights aimed at the background, or opt for a backdrop color—such as soft pink or true white—that works harmoniously with the available lighting from the outset.
