How to Pivot When Your Shoot Doesn’t Go as Planned

In a perfect world, every photoshoot would go exactly as scheduled—your model arrives early, the styling is flawless, and the light hits just right. But in reality? Things happen.

Recently, I had a studio shoot booked at the Ruby Manor, only to find out the original model had to cancel last minute. Instead of scrapping the session, I pivoted. The makeup artist called a friend who stepped in, we used what we had, and we ended up creating some fun portraits.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your time when plans change, especially when you're already committed to a studio space:

1. Use Who You Have

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

Ask if someone on set—or even someone you know—might be willing to step in. Friends, stylists, assistants, or even makeup artists themselves can make great models in a pinch. You might end up capturing something even more unique than originally planned.

2. Rethink the Concept, Not the Entire Shoot

You don’t need to throw out the whole idea—just adapt it to fit your new resources.

Focus on emotion, movement, light, or styling. Think in themes: solitude, mystery, edge, softness. Constraints often lead to some of the most creative outcomes.

3. Let the Location Inspire You

If you’re in a beautiful space, use the surroundings as your co-creator.

Lean into architectural features, vintage furniture, mirrors, windows, or textures already in the room. Build the story around the environment.

4. Focus on Details & Movement

Working with a non-model?

Shift the focus to hands, clothing texture, shadows, or motion blur. Have them move naturally or interact with props. This approach creates beautiful, abstract, or editorial-style content—even with limited styling.

5. Treat It Like a Test Shoot or Creative Jam

Not every session has to be client-perfect.

Use the opportunity to try new lighting setups, build content for socials, or shoot just for fun. Without pressure, you’re free to experiment and learn.

6. Stay Calm & Create Anyway

Your calm energy sets the tone.

Breathe, pivot, and use what you’ve got. Being a creative means thinking on your feet and turning unexpected situations into stories worth telling.

Some of your best work might come from moments you didn’t plan.
Book the studio. Show up. Make the art anyway. You’ll surprise yourself.
