Investing in Yourself as a Creative: My Experience at the Sophia Barrett Masterclass

As artists, it’s easy to get caught up in creating for others—clients, brands, or the next big project. But every so often, we need to pause and pour back into ourselves.

Earlier this month, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to take part in a one-on-one masterclass with the amazing Sophia Barrett, a photographer whose work is absolutely incredible.

The day was nothing short of transformative. From the moment I walked into her studio, I could feel the creativity in the air—an elegant set design followed by an atmosphere filled with excellence and intention. We spent the day exploring everything from creative direction and posing to client experience and business strategy.

More than anything, it reignited my passion for storytelling through portraiture and reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

This experience wasn’t just about learning new techniques—it was about investing in my growth as an artist, business owner, and woman of purpose.

Based off my experience I wanted to share five powerful lessons I took away about why investing in yourself is not only valuable but necessary for every creative:

1. Growth Requires Intention

Success doesn’t happen by accident. Every creative reaches a point where talent alone isn’t enough—you have to be intentional about growing your skills and refining your craft. Workshops, courses, and mentorships are opportunities to step outside your comfort zone and level up your artistry.

2. You Gain Perspective Beyond Your Own Lens

When you learn from others, you gain more than technical knowledge—you gain perspective. Hearing Sophia’s thought process behind lighting, emotion, and composition reminded me that there are infinite ways to tell a story. It challenged me to reimagine my approach to portraiture and to create with greater purpose.

3. It Rekindles Passion and Confidence

Creative burnout is real, especially when your art is also your business. Immersing yourself in an environment that inspires you can reignite your love for what you do. This masterclass gave me that spark again—the kind that reminds you your creativity still has more to say.

4. Relationships Are Priceless Investments

Community is everything. Connecting with like-minded creatives, mentors, and industry leaders opens doors that knowledge alone can’t. These relationships can shape your career, provide guidance during tough seasons, and remind you that you’re not walking this journey alone.

5. The Best Investment Always Pays in Growth

Whether it’s time, money, or energy, the return on investing in yourself is always worth it. You come away stronger, wiser, and more aligned with your purpose. Growth is never wasted—and it always shows up in your work, your confidence, and your results.

Final Thoughts

That day in Atlanta reminded me that we can’t pour from an empty cup. As creatives, our most powerful work comes when we’re inspired, challenged, and growing.

So take the class. Book the mentor. Attend the workshop. Whatever it takes to push yourself forward—do it.

Because the best investment you’ll ever make is in you.
